World Heritage Site Textbox UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 1972 adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the so-called UNESCO World Heritage Convention. Pursuant to that Convention, a World Heritage List of important world cultural and natural sites has been made: "The World Heritage List includes 830 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value.
